Factors playing a major role in the drying up of Urmia Lake

Effects of industries on water consumption

Around the world, there are very rigorous laws pertaining to industries, particularly in civilizations that cherish the environment. These regulations include everything, including water use, sewage discharge into the environment, and degradation of the ecosystem. Regarding the aforementioned, industries are constantly subject to tight oversight, and standard equipment for wastewater treatment must be available to industries. Regretfully, many companies in Iran lack the required standards and contemporary equipment, particularly in the Urmia Lake catchment area.

Due to a lack of advanced technology, industries in Iran are unable to treat the resulting wastewater effectively, which leads to water consumption that is multiple times higher than what is considered acceptable globally. They also fail to act in compliance with international standards regarding the consumption of water and the disposal of wastewater, and so, because they are unable to re-enter the cycle of use, the wastewater they produce contaminates both surface and subsurface waters, and so they use a lot more water than high-tech companies do.

Therefore, industries and factories, especially high-consumption ones like steel production industries, power plants, petrochemical industries, refineries, and other large factories, must have a wastewater treatment system with the necessary standards in order to prevent water waste and environmental pollution. This is so that the water consumed can be purified and reintroduced into its cycle of use.
