Drying up of Urmia Lake

Impact on the social life of the region's residents within a radius of 300 km

As explained in the Impact on the environment page, winds blowing within a 300-kilometre radius will contaminate the surrounding area with salt if Urmia Lake completely dries up, and more than 15 million people who live in contaminated areas will lose their lives since all of the region's surface and subsurface water resources will become contaminated with salt, all of the vegetation will be destroyed, the region's climate will shift, and the wind and air temperature will rise. As a result, both human and animal habitation will disappear from the area. Inhaling air tainted with salt and other dangerous materials from the lake bed, which is then transported by the wind to the surrounding towns and cities, is another one of the detrimental impacts on those who live near Urmia Lake. People who live in these contaminated environments will, therefore, eventually develop serious illnesses like cancer. Furthermore, due to the region's fertile soil and agricultural nature, agricultural productivity will be lost, and all the people living there will be compelled to relocate to other parts of the country or the world. Therefore, it is necessary to fulfil our duties in light of the environment and limited water resources.
