Drying up of Urmia Lake

Impact on the region and the world in economic and social terms

The majority of Urmia Lake's inhabitants work in agriculture and animal husbandry, and the region surrounding the lake is extremely productive for farming. Millions of tonnes of agricultural products, including potatoes, apples, peaches, lentils, peas, wheat, barley, and beans, are produced annually. Thousands of tonnes of farmed fish and red and white meat are also produced, distributed, and exported inside the nation. Due to the contamination of these areas and the subsequent loss of these products, over 15 million people's food needs must be met by imports, and so, food prices in the nation will rise as a result of its import and the removal of this large quantity of food. This problem may even have an impact on and raise the price of food globally.

It is also estimated that the country needs to relocate approximately 15 million people. However, Iran lacks the capacity and potential to relocate this many people, meaning that the majority of this population will relocate to neighbouring countries in Europe and America, and the residents of the region surrounding Urmia Lake will experience intense anguish and the loss of all of their life savings.

Above all, the region's people will sustain serious social, physical, and political harm, and it's feasible that the ramifications of this tragedy may impact not only Iran and its people but also the countries in the region, Europe, and America, since these social, health, and political upheavals will also extend to other regions and countries. Therefore, everyone in human society, especially those living in the catchment area of Urmia Lake, should take all necessary precautions to avert this calamity.
